It is with great sorrow that we have learned of the death of Dr. Rolf Hosfeld, Director of the Lepsiushaus research center in Potsdam, Germany, occurred on July 23, 2021.

For the past decade, Dr. Hosfeld initiated numerous regional and international research and education projects about the Armenian genocide and the history of humanitarianism. As an author, Dr. Hosfeld published fifteen books, among which “Death in the Desert: The Armenian Genocide”, re-published in 2015, translated to Turkish in 2018 and soon to come out in Armenian (2021).

Since 2019, the Lepsiushaus has been a close partner of AGBU Europe on its European Remembrance project – Genocide and International Justice after 1919 – focusing on the heritage of World War 1. With his colleague Roy Knocke, Dr. Hosfeld extensively contributed to the international conference that is set to take place at the end of this month in Berlin.

AGBU Europe is extremely grateful for the work accomplished by Dr. Hosfeld, for his enthusiasm and determination and it is committed to carry out the project in his honour.

We express our deepest condolences to his wife, family and the Lepsiushaus in Germany and we remain for ever grateful for the remarkable legacy he is leaving behind.

May his soul rest in peace.
