The recent commemorations of the Centenary of the Armenian Genocide were no routine business. In addition to events dedicated to remembrance around the world, they also involved votes in Parliaments, a Papal declaration, a furious reaction on the part of Turkey’s President and diplomatic crises between Turkey and several of its partners, In Brussels, the regional parliament initially abstained from observing a minute of silence in order not to upset some of its Members of Turkish origin or nationality.

Why should the Armenian Genocide remain such a burning issue, 100 years on? Although considerable historical research has been carried out in recent decades on the 20th Century’s first major genocide, there is very little research regarding its aftermath and contemporary political ramifications. This is what journalist and scholar Vicken Cheterian explores. Open Wounds is an enlightening and important book that will provide many answers to those who wish for, or wish to contribute to moving towards closure.
The discussion with Cheterian will be conducted by Aude Merlin, lecturer at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Books will be available for sale and for signature by the author. The event is facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/994416970592735/
